The Newtown VNA was formed during the influenza pandemic in 1918, which killed more people than World War I. In following with the VNA mission of bringing useful health information to the public, the local chapter celebrated its nine decades of existence by hosting free monthly health clinics and programs throughout 2008, including a special breakfast in February with Dr Cary S. Passik, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Danbury Hospital, free eye screenings, hearing tests, and a program on total joint replacement. As it has for many years, in 2008 the Newtown VNA also sponsored flu clinics this fall and winter.
The annual Newtown Labor Day Parade honored the 90th Anniversary of the Newtown VNA through the parade theme âVNA â Keeping Newtown Healthyâ this past September, and longtime VNA member Mae Schmidle was selected as Grand Marshal of the parade.
