Highlights From The Hardwood

Boys’ and girls’ youth basketball results from this past week are as follows:

Girls

Grade 5

Newtown 27, Wilton 12: Newtown’s attack was led by Nikki Zaccaro, Kamdynn Moroney, and Megan Goyda, all contributing 6 points apiece. Wilton’s offense was shut down and scored only 5 points in the first half behind the defensive efforts of Zaccaro and Megan Doyle. They both made several key steals in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for Newtown.

Boys

Grade 6

Fairfield 35, Newtown Gold 23: Ryan Shaw had 8 points and 15 rebounds to lead the way. Alex Gerbo scored 5 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Mason Melillo had 9 rebounds, and Austin LeBlanc played good defense at the point. 

Trumbull 41, Newtown Gold 30: Newtown rallied in the fourth, but came up short in this fast paced game.  Matt Elias hit three 3-pointers on his way to an 11-point performance. Matt Maturo chipped in with 8 points. Geoff Santore has several steals out of the press, and James Frazzetta led the team in assists.

Danbury 45, Newtown Gold 35: Ryan Shaw led a balance scoring attack with 8 points. Tim VanderHave netted 6, while Matt Elias and Kieran Lynch each had 5 points. Shaw grabbed 13 rebounds, while Alex Gerbo had 10.   

Monroe 45, Newtown 44: Jared Pearson scored 14 points and Andrew Svanda had 7 points and was strong under the basket. Michael Doyle and Matt Gerics shot well with 6 points each. Dillon Palumbo and Jamie Cocharane scored 4 points each. Newtown came up short at the end with Monroe sinking a late foul shot for the win.

Greenwich 45, Newtown 40: Newtown fell behind by 12 points before battling back to make the score close. Jamie Cocharane scored 8 points., and Andrew Svanda and Devon Luzietti both scored 6 points to help tie the game in the third quarter. Michael Doyle, Matt Gerics, Josh Houle, and Jared Pearson each scored 4 points each but it wasn’t enough for Newtown to pull through.
