Bell Ringers Needed If Annual Salvation Army Campaign Is To Be A Success

On December 10 volunteers of all ages will begin ringing bells around town for the Salvation Army’s Bell Ringing Campaign. As of Monday, December 6, however, Sylvia Poulin and Marie Sturdevant still had a number of openings available for bell ringers including hour-long shifts (or longer, if volunteers are feeling hardy enough to stand outside for an extra hour or two) on opening night.

“We need people to come out and help,” Ms Poulin said Monday morning. “We just aren’t getting the volunteers we’re used to.”

The Newtown chapter of the Salvation Army uses the money it collects to help those in need in Newtown. The Newtown Lions Club recently kicked off the 2010 Newtown Salvation Army Bell Ringing Campaign with a donation. Now Mrs Sturdevant and Ms Poulin are counting on the generosity of residents to staff the familiar red buckets around town for the next two weekends. The two ladies have been co-chairing the bell ringing campaign for more than two decades. Singles, couples, families, and groups are all welcome.

Openings are still available for this season, which runs Fridays and Saturdays, December 10–18. Buckets are set up at Sand Hill Plaza in the area between Stop & Shop and Stop & Save Liquors; outside Yankee Wine & Liquor on Queen Street; between Newtown Hardware and Drug Center Pharmacy, 61 Church Hill Road; and Pizza Palace, 65 Church Hill Road.

The two women would also like to have a bucket set up in Sandy Hook Center. One person has volunteer to ring for a few hours this weekend, but the women would like to have a few more hours filled before setting up the bucket.

Give Sylvia Poulin a call at 203-426-6803, or Marie Sturdevant at 203-740-2733, to volunteer.
