Winterset Ski Club Takes Tuckerman Ravine In Extreme Springtime Expedition
The Newtown-based Winterset Ski Club hiked and skied the famous Tuckerman Ravine on Mt Washington in New Hampshire on May 7. Itâs a spring pilgrimage for many hardcore skiers looking for some adventure once the traditional ski areas close for the season, and this marked the second year in a row the group has gone to Mt Washington.
This challenging hike is 3.8 miles with an ascent of a little more than 4,000 vertical feet. Whatâs more, 1,200 of those last grueling vertical feet result in an adrenaline-rushing skiable descent down the face of the bowl.
It takes about 11 hours round trip and includes terrain up and down steep river beds and snow covered chutes at an incline pitch of almost 50 degrees in places. This physically and mentally taxing, yet super-gratifying expedition is well worth it to the true adventurer seeking the spectacular views and definitive bragging rights.
