Nonprofits Can Go Solar With $1 Lease Program

As part of the Federal Stimulus Fund, nonprofits are able to receive solar electric systems supplied and installed at no charge from DCSenergy (DCS), according to Kathy Quinn, who is a member of the Newtown Sustainable Energy Commission.

“This is a leased system which can be purchased for one dollar after 60 months or it can be removed if requested,” Ms Quinn told The Bee June 6.

She said to be considered, buildings need to meet the following qualifications: roof must be of composite or asphalt material, roof should be in newer condition, southerly exposure to sun, non-shaded roof area, and there needs to be an electric meter in the building.

Ground mounts are also an option.

“Basically, if you fulfill the criteria, the applying agency will automatically qualify for the program,” Ms Quinn said. “The biggest challenge to applicants is having the minimum exposure to daily sunlight. A lot of places, we find, are too shady.”

DCS energy can install a 4kW or 9kW system to produce clean electricity. Annual savings are estimated at $1,200–$2,000 per meter. The nonprofit would be responsible for any permits or structural engineering costs that might be required.

Ms Quinn and her colleagues invite any nonprofit leaders to meet with representatives from DCS, who will be at the next Sustainable Energy Commission meeting to be held June 16 at 7:30 pm, at the Newtown Municipal Center at Fairfield Hills.
