To the Editor:

I am pleased to announce my support for Andrew Roraback in the Fifth District Republican primary. Andrew has the best positions on the issues overall to face the Democrat in the general election. Whether you agree with all his positions or not, he was honest in his answers to the questions at the debate among the four candidates in Newtown on Thursday, August 2. He resisted the temptation to give answers which were popular but not his true belief.

This honesty will stand him in good stead against Chris Donovan, the quintessential hack politician, or Elizabeth Esty, a candidate with no legislative or substantive political experience whatsoever.

I believe Andrew knows the Fifth District better than his opponents because he has represented a substantial portion of it for years. His margins of victory in the general elections have been among the highest in the state. The towns which are outside of Andrew’s 30th State Senate district are similar in makeup to the towns which are in his district, and his positions on the issues should play well in those towns.

Probably the most interesting aspect of the Newtown debate among the four candidates on August 2 was the opportunity of the candidates to ask one question of one of the other candidates. All three of the other candidates directed their question to Andrew. In my view, ganging up on Andrew was a sign of weakness. They know that his 18 years of experience in the Connecticut House of Representatives and the State Senate will transfer to the United States House of Representatives, giving him a “running start.”

Republicans should be happy that Andrew is willing to forego his law practice representing clients to representing us in Washington.

I urge all Republicans to vote for Andrew Roraback in the August 14 primary.

Robert H. Hall

Member, Republican State Central Committee

for the 28th District
