Newtowner Named Valedictorian

At St Joseph’s High School In Trumbull

Jessica Marie Jowdy, a Newtown resident and St Rose of Lima School graduate, was named the valedictorian for this year’s graduating class at St Joseph’s High School in Trumbull. Jessica graduated from St Joseph’s High School during a commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 2. She plans to attend Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania to study engineering this coming fall.

“I think a lot of it has to do with hard work and putting your mind to it,” said Jessica this week about her accomplishment.

During her tenure at the high school, Jessica was captain of both the school’s varsity soccer and basketball teams. She also earned statewide recognition for her basketball accomplishments. She was a member of her school’s National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and the High School Engineering Academy, among other extracurricular activities.

Jessica said she has always liked studying math and science and eventually became interested in engineering.

To students who are also working hard, Jessica said she believes anything is possible, with some sacrifices, like quality sleeping time, and setting your mind on it.

Jessica shared her congratulations to her fellow St Joseph’s High School graduates and all students also graduating in the couple weeks from Newtown and surrounding area high schools.

“I wish them the best in all their endeavors,” said Jessica.
