Bob Elliott defeated John Reisert 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday morning to capture the menâs open singles championship at the 2004 Bertram Stroock Memorial Tennis Tournament. It was Elliottâs sixth in a row and eighth overall.
Elliott first won in 1995 and then skipped a year before winning again in 1997. He skipped another year and won again in 1999, which started the current run of six singles titles in a row. Tim Snyder (who Elliott defeated in the semifinals) and Drew Arnold each won four consecutive Stroock singles titles; Snyder from 1981 to 1984 and Arnold from 1988 to 1991.
On the womenâs side, Stella Gabor won her first womenâs open singles title by defeating No. 1-seeded Julie Stern 6-0, 6-3. There has not been a repeat winner in womenâs singles since 1995 and 1996 when Diane Gucciardo won back-to-back championships. Joanne Klopfenstein won three titles in a row from 1990 to 1992.
On the menâs side, Elliott reached the finals by defeating Scott Gattey in the quarterfinals 6-5, 6-1 and Snyder in the semifinals. Reisert reached the finals by defeating Gerhardt Kutt in the quarterfinals and No. 2-seeded Tim Hanley in the semifinals. Forest Robertson, Bill Meier, Rob Logan and Dom Nocturne also competed in the menâs draw.
On the womenâs side, Gabor defeated Helen Yee while Stern defeated Irene Fitzsimmons in the semifinals on Saturday morning. Barbara Snyder and Anastasia Batzer also competed in the womenâs draw.

Gene Chappell and Bob Lapple defeated No. 1-seeded Dave Beauchemin and Bob Elliott 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in menâs open doubles while No. 1-seeded Eileen Frattaroli and June Frost defeated Wendy Fong and Stella Gabor 6-2, 6-1 in womenâs open doubles.
Barbara and Tim Snyder defeated Doug and Eileen Frattaroli 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) for the mixed doubles title and were aided in their effort when the No. 1 seed (Bob and Lauren Elliott) and No. 2 seed (Gene and Lorraine Chappell)Â had to withdraw from the tournament.
Also, Dom Nocturne defeated John Klopfenstein 6-1, 6-0 in menâs 55 singles.
In the Victor Coopersmith Cup Tournament for junior players, Veronica Parsloe won her third championship and second in the girlsâ 14-and-under division by defeating Katie Serock. Parsloe won a U18 title in 2003, but defaulted this year to Ashley Gabor in that division.
In other action, Tyler Ruefenacht defeated Kevin Culligan for the boysâ 10-and-under title while Christina Gould defeated Allie Brazo for the girlsâ 10-and-under title. Timo Roehrs defeated Mario Roehrs for the boysâ 14-and-under title as Will Culligan defeated Drew Adamek for the boysâ 18 and-under title.
