Sarah Higgins

Newtown resident Sarah Higgins was recently promoted from 2nd Cook to 1st Cook in the pastry department of Le Meridien Hotel in Boston. She was originally employed as a 3rd Cook at the hotel, but in a short period of time worked herself up through two promotions. She is a 1996 graduate of Newtown High School, and also a graduate from the Culinary Institute of America in New York City.

Sandy Hook resident Katherine Hunt Zimmerman, daughter of Frank and Carol Zimmerman of Rowledge Pond Road, recently graduated from MIT with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics. She is a 1996 graduate of Newtown High School.

Gretchen Wiemels of Newtown recently earned her Juris Doctor from Western New England College. She is the daughter of William and Christine Wiemels of Newtown. While at Western New England College, she participated in: the Criminal Law Soceity, the Graduation Committee, the American Bar Association Law Student Division, the Criminal Law Clinic, and the Women’s Law Society.

Julie Iwanicki has been chosen as the “Job Bank Member of the Month” by Newtown Youth Services for her outstanding work and positive attitude in the month of July.

Newtown residents Katie M. Johnstone, Emily Alice Malone, Lynn A. Cooper, and Brian R. Powers were named to Tufts University’s deans list for the spring 2000 semester.

Newtown resident Cortney Roy Bird recently graduated from Bowling Green University with a degree in the school of Arts and Sciences. He is the son of James and Jean Bird of Tory Lane.
