Available Scholarships At NHS

The following Scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Applications and/or more information are kept on file there. The 2002 Toyota Community Scholars Program – For high school seniors with a grade point average of 3.0 or better, who are actively involved in a service organization or project that has a positive impact on the school and/or community, and who demonstrate leadership. One student will be nominated by Newtown High School. He/she must be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident and plan to pursue a four-year undergraduate degree in the United States. The program awards 100 renewable scholarships, valued at $10,000 and $20,000 over four years. Application must be returned to the Newtown High School Career Center by November 16.

UConn Nutmeg Scholarship – This scholarship was instituted at the University of Connecticut in 1993 to attract and retain Connecticut’s brightest and most talented students. The scholarships are offered on a competitive basis for those students who have exemplary academic and co-curricular records. The value of this award is for a total of $12,500 per year. To be eligible, a student must: 1) be a US citizen or a permanent resident alien; 2) have been nominated a National Merit Semifinalist, a National Achievement Finalist, or a National Hispanic Recognition Finalist, or be nominated by their high school Guidance Counselor; 3) be a Connecticut resident; 4) be enrolled in a secondary school in Connecticut and enroll at UConn by the year 2002; and 5) be in the top 10 percent of his/her graduating class. Selection will be based on academic achievement, letters of recommendation, personal statements, leadership role, and interview. Interested students should see their guidance counselors. A completed Nutmeg application form and all supporting documents must be postmarked by November 1.

UConn Day of Pride Scholarship – The purpose of this scholarship is to attract and enroll students who have been traditionally underrepresented and to promote cultural diversity in the university community. The scholarships are offered on a competitive basis to 15 outstanding Connecticut high school seniors. The value of this award is for a total of $12,500 per year. To be eligible, a student must 1) be a US citizen or a permanent resident alien; 2) be involved in leadership activities throughout high school and/or community; 3) be in the top 15% of his/her graduating class; 4) be a Connecticut resident; and 5) be enrolled in a secondary school in Connecticut and enroll at UConn by the year 2002. Selection will be based on academic achievement, letters of recommendation, personal statements, contributions to multiculturalism in school and/or community, financial need, leadership role, commitment to UConn’s diversity mission, and interview. A completed Day of Pride application form and all supporting documents must be postmarked by November 1.
