Synagogue To Host Open House

Come learn about Congregation Adath Israel, Newtown’s only synagogue, on Sunday, August 19. The informational session will take place at a congregant’s home.

Congregational Adath Israel, 111 Huntingtown Road, is one of the oldest Jewish houses of worship in Connecticut. Founded in 1909 by a group of immigrant farmers, the congregation’s first building was erected in 1919. Plans are moving forward for a new facility.

Sabbath services are held every Friday night from September through June at 8 pm. A family service takes place the first Friday of each month at 7:30 pm.

Saturday services are the second and fourth Shabbat of each month at 9:30 am.

Sunday School classes for grades K-7 and weekday Hebrew school for grades 4 to 7 take place weekly and follow the Newtown public school calendar.

Social events include the Corn Party, Break-the-Fast, Klezmer Party, Progressive Dinner, and End of the School Year Barbecue.

The synagogue is also home to a Sisterhood and Brotherhood.

For information and the location of the open house, call 268-8005.
