Edward Charles âHankâ Shanley, 79, of Newtown, died February 27. He was born May 13, 1930, to Edward F. and Clarice Clapp Shanley. He was the husband of Esther Ticehurst Shanley for 57 years.
He graduated from Bethel High School and Henry Abbott Technical School in 1949. He was in the US Army from January 1951 to January 1953, and served in Korea.
He worked as a self-employed carpenter most of his adult life, retiring from DGR Construction & Demolition in 1995. He was well-known for working to a high standard of quality, and for expecting the same of others.
Mr Shanley was an avid fisherman since childhood and often stayed up all night before âopening dayâ of trout season. He also enjoyed deep-sea fishing. He was a dedicated stamp collector, and was president of the Eire Philatelic Society of Connecticut for 15 years.
Besides his wife, surviving are two sons and a daughter, David E. Shanley and wife, Ruthanna, of Newtown, Thomas W. Shanley of California, and Alice Shanley Brown and husband, Jonathan, of Ellington; five grandchildren; one sister; and many nieces and nephews. Five sisters predeceased him.
Cremation will take place, and burial will be at a graveside service in the spring.
