While their counterparts were busy in the State and New England Regional Tournaments, the Newtown 9-year-old Gold All Star team was having a pretty successful summer, too.

The Gold All-Stars defeated Weston, 10-4, last Friday night to capture the New Canaan Tournament title. The Gold team also defeated a pair of New Canaan teams and another from Greenwich along the way.

In the win over Weston, Nick Gerbo’s double drove in Kevin LeBlanc with the first run and then Chris Erikson’s single staked the locals to a 3-0 lead. The Gold exploded for five runs in the fourth, led by Mike Allwein’s RBI single and Patrick Mullins’ two-run single.

Joe Davis and Sam Ashey combined to shut down Weston’s offense in the first three innings with seven strikeouts between them. Weston began to rally back in the fourth scoring three runs, but Matt Spencer came in to pitch in relief with the bases loaded and no outs and was able to shut down Weston.

A diving catch in right field by Ashey, who then completed the double play by throwing a runner out at first base who ventured too far from the base (with a nice scoop by Mike Newman), was the key play).

The Gold also competed in three other tournaments this summer, finishing second in the Newtown U10 tournament, going to the semifinals in the Monroe tournament, and losing a heartbreaker in the Brookfield Jimmy Fund tournament, 6-5.
