More than 240 youth lacrosse players from 15 Connecticut programs descended upon Treadwell Park this past Saturday for the first annual Newtown 7-on-7 Fall Lacrosse Tournament.
More than 240 youth lacrosse players from 15 Connecticut programs descended upon Treadwell Park this past Saturday for the first annual Newtown 7-on-7 Fall Lacrosse Tournament.
Despite a constant downpour, the new artificial surface provided an ideal playing surface from the first game at 9 am until the last whistle blew at 7 pm and the event was considered a resounding success by all.
The Newtown Gold team took the Senior Division (7th/8th graders) title with a 6-1 record, including wins over Amity, Redding/Easton, Ridgefield, Brookfield, and New Fairfield in the championship game. Wilton beat Northeast Lax of Fairfield for the Junior Division (5/6 graders) championship.
Newtown fielded three Senior teams and two Junior squads.
For the Senior Golds, Ben Mahony led the way with a dominating performance at the midfield position, where Kyle Vignone and Kevin OâConnell contributed key plays all day. Former Newtowner Kevin Curry came down from Massachusetts to rejoin his old teammates and provided a speedy spark with Kyle âOCâ OâConnor on the sidelines hampered by a neck injury. Andrew Hyland was brilliant in goal, supported all day by defensemen Connor McNamara and Max Nacewicz. Max Paynter, Mike Zaccaro, Tyler Reszoly and Lewis Thompson provided offensive punch on attack.
The Senior Blues also played well, with Andrew Golankiewicz, Tim Dalton, Zach Dent, Dana Hansen, and Tyler Davenport making an impact.
The Senior White team featured great play from Connor Byrne, Colby Summerlin, Will Northrop, John Johnson, and Brandon Body in goal.
Newtownâs Junior Gold team got outstanding efforts from Justin Brophy, Trey Trudell, Colin Morris, and Justin Spath. The Blue team also played well, with great all-around play from Brendan McNamara, James Marusi, Phillip Reynolds, Nick Fatse, and Evan Isaacs in goal.
The event will become a fixture in Newtown each Columbus Day Weekend.
