EIGHTH GRADE

Newtown 45 Bridgeport 6

Max Nacewicz and Eric McCabe scored two touchdowns apiece as the eighth-grade team rolled over Bridgeport, 45-6, to move to 6-0 on the season.

Nacewicz scored on a five-yard burst up the middle and an 80-yard interception return while McCabe scored on a one-yard run and while recovering a punt block in the end zone. Rory Noonan added a 20-yard touchdown run and four extra-point kicks while Matt Genovese chipped in with a 60-yard scamper for his first TD.

The scoring happened quickly and from all angles as the 8th grade team made quick work of an overmatched Bridgeport team.

McCabe scored on the first Newtown possession and Noonan on the second. Defensive end Sean Devaney recovered a fumble that led to the second touchdown and it was that defense that helped unravel things for Bridgeport.

A bad snap on a punt attempt was pounced on by McCabe in the end zone and, later, cornerback Ryan Korth recovered another fumble at the 10 – which led to Nacewicz’s five-yard run that put the locals up, 32-0, at the half.

On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Genovese bolted off-tackle for a 60-yard TD and a 38-0 Newtown lead. Later, Nacewicz plucked a Bridgeport pass out of the air and raced 80 yards the other way for the score.

Bridgeport finally got on the scoreboard late in the game on a 10-yard quarterback keeper.

The locals can clinch a playoff berth with a victory and can lock down the No. 1 seed with another victory the following week, against Monroe.

SIXTH GRADE

Newtown 13, Mahopac 13

Danny Hebert scored on runs of 50 and 80 yards, but the sixth-graders had to settle for a 13-13 draw with the Lions of Mahopac.

Dean Baye, Kyle Degenhardt, Kory Kling and James Marusi sparked the defensive effort for the Nighthawks while Justin Devellis and Phillip Reynolds ran the ball well behind the offensive line blocking of Tom Bauer, Josh Villa, Zach Clyne and Robbie Hughes.

The sixth-graders will play Stamford at Rippowam Middle School on Sunday at 3 pm in their next game.

FIFTH GRADE

Newtown 25, Mahopac 0

Newtown 20, Monroe 0

Julian Dunn scored on runs of 95 and 36 yards as the fifth-grade team pounded Mahopac, 25-0, last weekend for its second consecutive shutout.

Cooper Gold also scored on a 65 kickoff return while Jack Lago added a two-yard touchdown run for the 5-1 Nighthawks, who defeated Monroe, 20-0, the previous week. The locals had out-scored their opponents 134-58 in six games.

On Saturday, the locals jumped right out to a 6-0 lead when Gold returned the opening kick 65 yards for a TD. In the second quarter, Dunn – on first and 20 – broke open on a 36-yard touchdown run and after Drew Tarantino tossed the conversion pass to Nick Strokis the ‘Hawks had a 13-0 lead.

The defense stymied Mahopac at the start of the second half and the offense took over. Chase Wurtz and Matt Hoyt ran the ball well – with Hoyt gaining eight yards on a run and Wurtz gaining 10 – to bring the ball down to the Mahopac two. From there, Lago punched it into the end zone for the TD and a 19-0 Newtown lead.

In the fourth quarter, Dunn stalled a Mahopac drive deep in Newtown territory by picking off a pass at the five. And then, on the other side of the ball, Dunn broke free on a 95-yard run to put the locals ahead, 25-0.

A week before, Dunn scored a pair of touchdowns and Gold added one as the locals blanked Monroe, 20-0.

The defense was the story as Matt White led the charge at nose tackle. White, Patrick Afriyie, Tommy Gleason, Jimmy Leidlein and Tarantino helped shut down the Monroe offense by controlling the line of scrimmage. The stingy D allowed only one Monroe first down the entire game.

Wurtz had a great day at cornerback with 4 tackles.

The locals opened the game with a 75-yard scoring drive, fueled by the offensive line of Ty Runkle, Strokis, Afriyie, Matt Bouton, Patrick Carrello, Justin Saint and Kyle McKnight. Backs Lago, Dunn, Austin Babyak, Connor Noonan and Wurtz carried the load.

The 10-play drive featured runs of 10 and 12 yards by Noonan, and one of 12 yards by Dunn, culminated by a two yard dive by Dunn for the TD. Throughout the drive, Wurtz and Babyak delivered key blocks to spring Noonan and Dunn.

Tarantino filled in at quarterback for the PAT and connected with Strokis for the conversion and the 7-0 lead. Later, the locals put together another decent drive with Dunn scoring from nine yards out to put Newtown ahead 13-0.

White continued to hamper Monroe, stopping two plays for losses and forcing a punt. Soon after, Dunn burst through the Monroe defense for a 50-yard touchdown … only the play was called back on a penalty. Dunn continued to carry the load, later, and after a one-yard gain by Wurtz, Dunn took the ball down to the Monroe 10 following nice lead blocks by Gold and Wurtz. From the 10, Gold – following blocks by Strokis and Lago – ran around end for the touchdown and a 20-0 Newtown lead.

In the second half, the Newtown defense kept Monroe at bay with great individual efforts by White and Tommy Gleason on the defensive line and Wurtz at the corner.

FOURTH GRADE

Newtown 31, Hudson Valley 0

After a bye week, the fourth-graders certainly seemed refreshed as they pounded Hudson Valley, 31-0, to remain undefeated at 5-0.

Nine different runners carried the ball 33 times for 257 yards. Joe “The Waterbug” Santella carried 10 times for 54 yards and a touchdown while Nick Lotrecchiano once again dazzled the crowd with two touchdowns – one rushing and one coming off of a beautifully executed screen pass from quarterback Troy Frangione.

Frangione had a spectacular day at the helm, going 3-for-5 for 60 yards and a score.. Meanwhile, Colton Smith continued to pad his stats with a 27-yard touchdown run up the middle. Newcomers Jaret DeVellis and Shane Quimby also jumped into the scoring frenzy with DeVellis sweeping left for a 10-yard touchdown and Quimby adding a point-after.

Nolan Fisher, Max Rucinski, Colten Mororey and Jonathan Sherman all carried the ball as well rounding out an incredible demonstration of offensive depth and talent.

The Nighthawks defense was equally dominating, holding the HV Knights to –11 yards of total offense on the day. In the last three games, the Nighthawk defense have allowed just 68 yards of offense and only 12 points.

Max Rucinski and Smith led the D on Saturday by combining for more than 15 tackles. Bubba Condon contributed four solo tackles. Defensive linemen Eric Cascone, Stephen Grasso, Griffin Davis, Ryan Szalay, Michael Cirone, Aidan Petershack, Markus Elken, Harry Duffy, Jake Lambert, and Logan Walsh wreaked havoc in the HV backfield, causing three fumbles.

Rory Phillips recovered one of the fumbles to end any chance of a last second drive.

The ‘Hawks – who have already clinched a first-round home playoff game – will be at Southern Dutchess this weekend.

79er GOLD/BLUE

Gold 19, Blue 12

Trevor Lopez rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns to lead Newtown Gold past Newtown Blue, 19-12, in an intra-town battle.

The Gold improved to 6-0 while the Blue – coming off a 19-0 shutout of Southern Dutchess White – fell to 2-4.

Gold got off to a slow start and gave the ball up to the Blue at the Gold 49. From there, the Blue – using quick pitches and blasts – moved the ball downfield where Devin Luzietti opened the scoring on a sweep right. But on Gold’s next possession, a beautifully-executed halfback option pass from Mike Doyle to Matt Elias covered 70 yards and evened the score at 6-6.

Nick Samuelson of Gold recovered a fumble on Blue’s ensuing drive and soon after Lopez scored on a one-yard push to put the Gold ahead, 12-6. Lopez had a 35-yard run on the drive, sparking by the blocking of James Leuci and Samuelson.

Samuelson and Mike Dutsar made strong defensive plays for Gold to close out the first half. The second half started with Blue getting the ball, but Ryan Shaw and Doyle made two great tackles and Matt Maturo recovered a fumble giving the ball to Gold at the Blue 44.

The Gold moved the ball to the Blue 20 but the drive stalled on a fumble. Still, Colin Thies of the Gold helped the defense stop Blue on the ensuing drive. Soon after, Lopez broke four tackles and scored from 40 yards out to put Gold on top, 19-6.

Heading into the fourth quarter, Blue still couldn’t get untracked as Thies made three great plays to force a four and out. But later Blue, starting at its own 45, moved the ball methodically with Adam Robertson, Jared Pearson and Luzietti carrying the load. Luzietti took it into the end zone as Blue pulled to within seven.

But that’s where it ended as the Gold defense stopped Blue with 22 seconds left on the clock.
