OBIT (Sarbello; Sanford; Shea; Melvin)
Susan S. Sarbello
Susan S. Sarbello, 51, a resident of West Redding since 1980, died on July 13
at Danbury Hospital after an extended illness. She was the wife of Alfred J.
Sarbello and the mother of Stacey Reardon of Newtown.
Mrs Sarbello was born in Springfield, Mass., on May 29, 1948, a daughter of
Mary (Gideos) Hamar of Jacksonville, Fla., and the late Peter Hamar. She had
been employed at Union Carbide in Danbury and later owned and operated a
printing business, known as Minuteman Press, in Norwalk until illness forced
her retirement. Mrs Sarbello was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in
Georgetown.
In addition to her husband of 30 years, mother and daughter, she is survived
by a son, David S. Sarbello of New Milford; a brother, Peter Hamar of Austin,
Tex.; and two sisters, Carole Herring of Yulee, Fla. and Darcy Roy of
Greensboro, N.C.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 16, 10 am, in
Sacred Heart Church, Georgetown. The Rev M. Joseph Joaquin, pastor, will
officiate. The interment will be private.
Calling hours were scheduled for Thursday, July 15, from 5 to 8 pm at the
Bouton Funeral Home, 31 West Church Street, Georgetown.

Robert T. Sanford
Robert T. Sanford, 72, husband of Viola (Hoyt) Sanford of Nunnawauk Meadows,
Newtown, died July 8 in Danbury Hospital.
Mr Sanford was born in Milford on June 2, 1927, a son of the late Henry and
Eda (Spencer) Sanford. He was an electrical contractor until his retirement in
1980. A resident of Newtown the past 22 years, he previously lived in Bethel.
During World War II, Mr Sanford served in the US Navy.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Peter Sanford of Danbury
and Michael Bierbower of New Milford; two daughters, Nancy Carlson of New
Milford and Karen Perrone of Northfield; and two sisters, Helen McElwee of
Westport and Marion Baxter of Ridgefield. He was predeceased by a son, Robert
Bierbower.
Private funeral services were held July 12 in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main
Street, Newtown. Burial was in Bald Hill Cemetery, Wilton.

Peggy Ann Shea
Peggy Ann Shea, 50, of Golden, Colo., wife of Joseph Fanciulli, died May 16 in
Hospice of Metro Denver. She was the aunt of John Soderholm of Newtown.
She was born in Bridgeport and graduated from St Ann's School, Bassick High
School, and Housatonic Community-Technical College. She was an organizer and
active participant in the Race For the Cure in Denver during her courageous
eight-year battle with breast cancer.
In addition to her husband of 30 years and her nephew, she will be sadly
missed by her children, Brian, Mary, Kevin and Mark Fanciulli and her
grandson, Doyle, all of Colorado; her father, John Shea of Black Rock; her
sister, Maureen Shea of Fairfield; her brother, Donald Shea, and his wife,
Georgia Ross, of Boulder, Colo; and her nieces, Cindy Phelps of Bethel and
Julie Fairfield of Trumbull.
A Memorial Mass was held on July 13 at St Thomas Church, 1719 Post Road,
Fairfield.

Richard D. Melvin
Richard D. Melvin, 65, died July 10 in Las Vegas, Nev. after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Lucy (Kocet) Melvin and lived at 11 Dodgingtown Road in
Newtown.
Mr Melvin was born in Danbury, February 15, 1934, son of the late James L.
Melvin, Sr, and Elizabeth (Chuvala) Melvin. He attended Bethel schools and
graduated from Bethel High School, Class of 1952. A veteran of the Army, he
served in the Korean Conflict.
He worked for many years in the restaurant field and as a young man he was
with Durkin's Diner on White Street. Prior to his retirement, he and his wife
owned and operated the Sycamore Drive-In in Bethel for 13 years. They were the
originators of Cruise Night at the Sycamore, a well known 50s weekly event
that drew crowds of collectors and admirers of vintage automobiles. Mr Melvin
was an avid golfer and a member of the Ridgewood, Watertown, and Rockridge
Country Clubs and the Newtown Club where he was the golf champion. Mr Melvin
was also a Third Degree Knight of Columbus.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Glen, and a daughter, Kelly
Lairsey, both of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a stepson, Vincent Keenan, III, of
Southbury; three brothers, James L. Jr, and Paul E, both of Bethel, and Donald
of Guilford; a sister, Rosemary Nani of W. Los Angeles, Calif.; six
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on July 15 at St Peter Church in
Danbury. Burial was in St Peter Cemetery.
Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, was in charge of
arrangements.
