When And How The Religious Right Was Formed

ROXBURY — Randall Balmer, PhD, will discuss his book Thy Kingdom Come: How the Religious Right Distorts the Faith and Threatens America on Sunday, July 30, at 4 pm, at Minor Memorial Library. The program is free and open to the public.

Dr Balmer is a committed evangelical who in his new book delves into the history of the religious right and explores the extent to which church and state have become unseemly bedfellows. His book explores such issues as abortion, homosexuality, and public education and what he views as the political hijacking of the Christian faith.

In Thy Kingdom Come, Dr Balmer laments the trivialization of Christianity and offers a rallying cry for Christians to reclaim the noble traditions of evangelical faith, traditions that in the past were aligned with progressive issues of the abolition of slavery, universal suffrage, and public education.

Dr Balmer’s presentation “promises to lead to a lively discussion of important subjects,” said library director Valerie Annis.

Dr Balmer has written ten books, including Encyclopedia of Evangelism and Mine Eyes have Seen the Glory: A Journey into the Evangelical Subculture in America, which was made into a three-part documentary for PBS.

He is the Ann Olin Whitney Professor of American Religion at Columbia University and Barnard College.

A book signing and reception, with refreshments, will follow Dr Balmer’s talk.

Minor Memorial Library at 23 South Street, is handicapped-accessible. Call the library at 860-350-2181 for additional information and directions.
