‘Dialogue With The Docs’ Heart To Heart Talks

SOUTHBURY — Brownstein Jewish Family Service has teamed up with The Heart Center of Greater Waterbury to present a series of informative and free lectures by top-notch physicians during February

“Every year since 1963 Congress has declared February as American Heart Month, and so this time of year is appropriate to spend some time with matters of the heart,” said Loraine Shea, executive director of The Heart Center. “Most people do not know that heart disease is the number one killer of women. Keeping yourself up to date with ways to maintain heart health, as well as learning about the current treatments available, is a great way to spend a February afternoon.”

After each talk, there will be plenty of time for members of the audience to ask questions. The programs will take place at the Walzer Family Jewish Community Campus, 444 Main Street North.

“The Beat Goes On: Advances In Cardiac Surgery, Part I” will be presented Monday, February 12, at 2 pm, by Jonathan Hammond, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon at The Heart Center of Greater Waterbury. Dr Hammond will talk about the improvements in cardiac surgical procedures and how they have decreased the amount of time necessary for rehabilitation.

“Keep Your Heart Ticking” will be the theme Tuesday, February 20, at 1 pm, following the Love & Knishes Lunch at noon. Henry Borkowski, MD, medical director of The Heart Center of Greater Waterbury will be the speaker. Dr Borkowski’s presentation will look at the signs and symptoms of heart attacks and heart disease and reviews various medications that are utilized for optimum heart health.

Those wishing to have lunch beforehand at the Love & Knishes Program at noon may do so with a donation of $5.50. Call for details and reservations.

The final program will take place Wednesday, February 21, at 2 pm. “The Beat Continues: Advances in Cardiac Surgery, Part II” will feature David Underhill, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon at The Heart Center of Greater Waterbury. Dr Underhill will focus on different advances in surgery for the patient requiring open heart surgery. Once again, there will be plenty of time to ask questions.

For reservations for these free programs call Debby Horowitz, Brownstein Jewish Family Service Director, at 267-3177, extension 105.
