Ocean Animals At Next Mattatuck Museum Discovery Club

WATERBURY — The Long Island Sound is coming to The Mattatuck Museum Arts & History Center’s Discovery Club on Sunday, August 30, from 2-4 pm.

Schooner, Inc.’s Touch Tank will allow kids to see, smell and touch live animals usually lurking below the ocean’s surface. While meeting horseshoe crabs, spider crabs, whelks, mud snails and hermit crabs they’ll learn valuable lessons about ocean ecology and environmental protection, and play “marine mix-up” by identifying creatures whose name tags have been misplaced.

New Haven-based Schooner, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting Long Island Sound through environmental education and sailing.  Schooner, Inc. owns and operates the tallship Quinnipiack, the official flagship of New Haven, berthed at Long Wharf Pier during sailing season. Schooner Inc. programs are centered on hands-on learning.

Discovery Club is a monthly program designed for kids who like experimenting and discovering new worlds. On the last Sunday of each month participants stretch their imaginations by exploring science, technology and the arts. Monthly attendance is not necessary.

Children’s admission is $7 or $4 for museum members.
