The Enduring Strength

Of Free Enterprise

To the Editor:

Recently, Bridgewater resident Frank Kelly, president/CEO of Danbury Hospital and Danbury Health Systems, and Southbury resident William Bassett, chairman of The W.E. Bassett Company, were inducted into the Free Enterprise Hall of Fame by Junior Achievement of Western Connecticut. More than 300 business people were on hand to acknowledge both the entrepreneurial leadership and community dedication shown by Mr Kelly, Mr Bassett, and the three other inductees.

A team of committed volunteers, led by General Chair Dr George Dunbar and co-chairs Philip Palmieri and Tom Santa, created a memorable evening. Thanks to them, title sponsor Pitney Bowes, and activity sponsors Integrated Print Solutions, Santa Energy, and Basement Systems, the evening exceeded its goal by $15,000.

The money will help fund JA programs in K–12 in Bethel, Brookfield, Newtown, Seymour, and 16 other Fairfield County school systems. JA classroom volunteers lead hands-on activities that teach financial literacy, develop lifelong work skills, and encourage an entrepreneurial spirit.

Despite the recent recession, the United States remains one of the strongest nations in the world. One reason is its free enterprise system, which allows individuals to develop a dream into a business, create jobs, support their families, and build wealth for the global economy. Since 1946, Junior Achievement of Western Connecticut and its volunteers have worked with the next generation to ensure the enduring strength of our free enterprise system, going from just 450 students in 1946 to more than 19,000 this year.

If you agree that young people must understand our financial system, should have skills to get and keep a job, and should be prepared for entrepreneurial challenges and rewards, you can help. Invite a JA staff member to present its new short video and talk about its 21st Century programs to your PTO or community group. Make a financial contribution. Most importantly, volunteer a few hours each week in a classroom. Like the more than 1,250 men and women who currently work with students, you’ll receive training and all materials. You can call 203-382-0180 or visit www.jaconnecticut.com.

Few activities we do are as important as giving our children a solid foundation on which to build their financial future — and that of our community and country.
