Dr Francis Scholan

Dr Francis Scholan, 81, pediatrician, sailor, fisherman, and medical counselor to town, city, and university, died at his Fairfield home, January 9, of leukemia and congestive heart failure. Born May 17, 1929, in Waterbury, Dr Scholan was the son of Francis Patrick and Elizabeth Fitzmaurice Scholan.

He is survived by his beloved wife Gail Clouet Scholan; two siblings, including Margaret Hoganauer of Newtown; three children and three stepchildren; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; many nieces and nephews. Dr Scholan was predeceased in 1988 by his first wife, Clara Suhr Scholan, and in l957 by twin daughters.

He had been an US Air Force Major, Fairfield town physician, medical director at Fairfield University, and federal Head Start consultant to the City of Bridgeport. He was a volunteer physician at the Indian Health Service at Fort Defiance, Ariz., served two tours of duty at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti, volunteered for the AmeriCares Clinic in Norwalk, and with Dr William Kueffner and others, cared for thousands of children.

Dr Scholan was president of the Saugatuck Fish and Game Club, a member of the Fairfield Beach Club and of the Pequot Yacht. He was a dedicated tennis player, expert fly fisherman, accomplished sailor, and chairman of the ancient Southport club called Bachelor’s Comfort and Married Men’s Retreat.

He was a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and also of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was a senior attending physician at the Department of Pediatrics and member of the Medical Executive Committee at St Vincent’s in Bridgeport.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Friday, January 14, at 10 am, at St Anthony of Padua Church, 149 South Pine Creek Road, Fairfield. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Calling hours were scheduled for Thursday, January 13, from 4 to 8 pm, in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.
