Occupation: I am a journalist. I am the editor of Breaking Views for Reuters News Agency, a column published in The New York Times and in papers all over the world.

Family:  My wife Hannah and I have two children. Sam is an eighth grader at Newtown Middle School, and Ethan is at Reed Intermediate School, in the sixth grade. My parents, Bob and Lynda Cox, still live in Newtown, too.

Pets: We have no pets. We travel too much.

How long have you lived in Newtown? We moved here when I was 2 years old. I went through Newtown schools and graduated from NHS in 1985. Then I left, and went to the University of Vermont and Columbia, and lived abroad for many years. My kids were born in Milan and in London. In 2000, I co-founded Breaking Views in London. In 2004, we decided we wanted to open a US Breaking Views outpost, and we moved back. I wanted to be somewhere I could write and think, and be close to New York City. Then we saw this great old farm house in Newtown, and I thought it would be great for the kids to be near their grandparents, so we bought it. I couldn’t believe I was moving back to Newtown. It’s worked out well.

What do you like to do in your free time? I do a lot of sports. I play ice hockey with an adult league in Danbury, and both of our kids are involved in ice hockey, so I’m running all over the state with that. I run, and I mountain bike, and I travel a lot, both for work and for pleasure. I listen to a lot of music and my brother and I try to get to concerts all over the country. Last month I was at the Moog Fest in Asheville, N.C. I play guitar, too, badly.

Do you have a favorite musician? I’m very eclectic. I listen to a lot of indie rock, but I can switch to a Grateful Dead channel and be equally satisfied. Last week I happened to be in London for work, and I saw The Cure, an 80s band, at the Royal Albert Hall.

Do you have a favorite vacation destination? We try to do a different trip every year. This past April, we took the boys to Nicaragua. We climbed a bunch of volcanoes, went kayaking, and did some surfing. Last year, we went to Brazil, to the state of Bahia, which was gorgeous. There’s a great city there called Salvador. Those are the kinds of trips we like to take with the kids. We always go skiing, too. We try to visit my brother each winter in Salt Lake City for some epic skiing.

What is the best thing about Newtown? It’s got all of the charm of being part of New England, and the proximity to New York City. But it feels removed enough from the rat race to be attractive. Newtown is kind of an exceptional place. And the friends we have made here are amazing. One disappointment for me is that Newtown has lost a bit of its rural charm. I hope this pause in our economic cycle will make people take stock of what happens if you build on every piece of acreage. I don’t think that has really happened here yet, though.

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you pick? Probably literary characters. I could see having a bourbon with Raymond Carver, or a glass of Paul Roger champagne with Winston Churchill. I’d like to have a glass of sherry with Lord Byron. It would be amazing to share a drink with all of them, on one day.

Do you have a personal philosophy? Question everything, and think for yourself. Be curious!

Do you have a guilty pleasure? It’s newsprint! My fingers are covered in it each morning. I read a lot of newspapers. It’s part of my job, but I love it. I’m like the last person on the planet to get all of the newspapers delivered and not read them online. It’s just not the same.
