Newtown High School teacher Carol Skolas’s Art Portfolio students had tape in hand and many of their works before them on Wednesday, December 10, as they prepared the pieces for exhibit at C.H. Booth Library.

The artwork, entirely created by NHS students, will be on display at the town library, 25 Main Street, during library hours in the building’s meeting room from Saturday, December 13, to Friday, December 19.

A formal reception will be held the night before the artwork is set to come down, on Thursday, December 18, from 4 to 6 pm.

Students who will have artwork on display are Baxter Hankin, Haley Kean, Emily Radatovich, Helena Reznikoff, Jessie Sailer, Rachel Saint, and Michael Triantafilidis.

Michael said he is excited for his pieces to be on display at the library. He plans on having 11 or 12 works of art on view, and he described them as mostly conceptual pieces.

“Go see the show,” Michael said, when asked why he would tell people to go see the display at the library, “because it’s a great way to see everybody’s works of art and different perspectives.”

Haley, who is planning on having 10-12 works on display, said her works include paintings, charcoal pieces, and pastel creations. Haley also said she is excited to have the opportunity to have her work on display so her teachers can see her work in one place.

Emily said she will have nine to ten pieces on view, ranging from pencil drawings to marker pieces.

“People should come to the show because it supports the art program,” she said, explaining that she feels art programs have lost support to sports over the years. Later she added, “It’s important for people to support the arts so they don’t die down.”

With multiple pieces in front of him that he was working to prepare to hang, Baxter said the ten pieces he plans on having displayed range from the realistic and observational to the more abstract.

“I feel like it really represents the school’s art department well and really represents that there are a lot of talented arts at Newtown High School,” Helena said about what people can expect from the art exhibit.

Ms Skolas said her students met challenges this school year when she pushed them, and she feels they will be “incredible contributors to our society.”

The library is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 am to 8 pm; Friday, 11 am to 5 pm; Satuday, 9:30 am-5 pm; and Sunday, 12-5 pm. The NHS Art Portfolio collection can be viewed any time the library is open, when the meeting room is not in use.

NHS Art Portfolio student Baxter Hankin worked on Wednesday, December 10, to make sure one of his works of art would be ready to be hung at the upcoming art show.
