NYCAAP Honored By The Red Cross

Students from Newtown Youth Creating AIDS Awareness for Peers (NYCAAP)

received an award from the Western Connecticut Chapter of the American Red

Cross at its annual meeting at the Ethan Allen Inn in Danbury recently.

NYCAAP was recognized for service through the community through HIV/AIDS

education. Last summer six NYCAAP members attended Stand Tall, a camp

sponsored by the Red Cross for youth interested in being certified in various

programs. Sponsored by Newtown Youth Services, NYCAAP has 25 members, all

students at Newtown High School, who provide classroom presentations at the

middle school and high school, and sponsor AIDS awareness activities such as

last year's display of the Names Project AIDS memorial quilt.

For World AIDS Day, which is December 1, the group held its annual

distribution of AIDS fact cards and ribbons at various locations around town

and at the high school.

In other action at the annual meeting, the Red Cross presented an award to The

Newtown Bee for its community service in publicizing local blood drives.

Michael Burns of Sandy Hook accepted an award on behalf of Union Carbide for

the company's 1998 disaster relief campaign. The Newtown Kennel Club received

the chapter's pet first aid award.

A slate of officers for 1998-99 also was elected. They include Arthur Stueck

II, chapter chairman; Douglas Bobay and Paul Palanzo, vice chairmen; Marge

English, secretary, and Robert Graef, treasurer.

Marsha Daria of Sandy Hook was elected to a second three-year term on the

Board of Directors. Other Newtown directors include Joseph Morrissey and

Cheryl Thierfelder. Mr Morrissey is an executive with NMBT, Danbury, and Ms

Thierfelder is with Pharmco, Brookfield.

The chapter services 17 towns in Western Connecticut including Newtown.

Services include mass and single-family disaster relief, blood collection,

international tracing and emergency financial services to the US armed forces

members, first aid, and CPR training, lifeguarding and water safety

instruction.

This year National Red Cross Director Elizabeth Dole has set a goal to raise

$50 million nationwide for hurricane victim relief on the US Gulf coast,

Puerto Rico, several islands, and Central America.
