Around The Horn ... Baseball Results

Youth baseball highlights from the 13U-15U division are as follows:

Newtown 11, Harlem 0: Newtown exploded for 10 first-inning runs to defeat Harlem in an exhibition game to foster goodwill between city and suburban youths November 7 at Fairfield Hills Field. Jon Hull and Kyle Wilcox walked, and Chris Tenney singled to load the bases, before Austin Bonadio ripped a two-run double down the left-field line. Tenney scored on a wild pitch, and Eric Sutton and Brandon Cooper walked to reload the bases. Austin Raftery walked to knock in a run, and Dean Demers smacked a two-RBI double to right center. Hull followed by lining a long two-run double over the centerfielder’s head. Anthony Maki reached on an error and stole second, and Wilcox crushed a two-run single. Hull and Demers each pitched two shutout innings. Hull yielded two walks and hit a batter, and Demers gave up a single. Newtown’s final run scored in the third inning. Hull singled and was erased on a fielder’s choice grounder by Maki. On a hit-and-run, Wilcox reached high out of the strike zone and lofted a towering fly ball to left. The left fielder booted the ball, and Maki scored from first base. The two teams decided to end the game after 3 ½ innings and play a second five-inning game.

Newtown 12, Harlem, 3: Newtown jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead and coasted to victory in the second game of the doubleheader. Dean Demers singled, Austin Raftery slashed a double over the centerfielder’s head and Ben Stoller rapped a two-strike curveball into right center for an RBI single. Stoller stole second, and Raftery and Stoller scored on errors. Kyle Wilcox drilled an RBI single to center to bring home Austin Bonadio, who had reached on an error. Newtown pitchers Wilcox, Eric Sutton, Austin Bonadio and Austin Raftery struck out six and scattered four singles. In the second inning, Newtown scored three runs to boost its lead to 7-1. Demers and Stoller smacked singles, and Newtown capitalized on two walks and three wild pitches. In the third inning, Newtown upped its lead to 9-2. Bonadio ripped a single, and Chris Tenney and Wilcox walked. Bonadio scored on a wild pitch, and Tenney came home when Jon Hull hit a long sacrifice fly to right field. In the fourth inning, Brandon Cooper reached on an error by the third baseman, and Stoller walked. Wilcox slammed a single, his fourth RBI of the day. In the fifth inning, Newtown tallied two more runs. Anthony Maki crushed a double over the centerfielder’s head, Hull ripped a hard single to right field, and Maki scored when Demers drilled an RBI single. Raftery lined a hard single to center, and Stoller blasted an RBI sacrifice fly to left field.
