Fairfield American 8, Newtown Bombers 6: Sean Ferris and Robert Katrinak led the Bomber offense with two hits apiece in the loss to Fairfield. Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, the Bombers rallied for six runs to take the lead. Ferris led off the inning with a double down the third base line, Spencer Johnson hit a triple over the center fielderâs head scoring Ferris, and after two walks to load the bases, Matt Campbell hit a single to score two runs. Peter Winans then followed with a single of his own to plate two additional runs and Robert Katrinak concluded the scoring with single to right field. Fairfield came back in the bottom of the fourth with three of their own and scored one more in the fifth to complete the scoring. Campbell and Ryan Shaw made nice plays in the field.
Newtown Bombers 4, Monroe 2: Scott McLean was the hitting star of the game; he hit a bases-loaded single to lead the Bombers to victory. Trailing 1-0, Shawn Fulton led off the top of the fourth inning with a single, stole two bases, and scored the tying run on a passed ball. In the fifth inning, the Bombers took the lead for good when Sean Ferris and Matt Campbell singled, Ryan Shaw was issued a walk and McLean hit his single to plate two runs. Shaw completed the scoring on a passed ball. Shaw, Spencer Johnson and Dylan Tyrrell combined to pitch a two-hitter and struck out 11 batters, while Brian Gallagher, Fulton, Ferris, Tyrrell and Johnson all made plays in the field.
Newtown Hawks 8, Bethwood 1: Austin LeBlanc and Michael Liberante each hurled two scoreless innings, both fanning four batters to lead the Hawks to victory. Brandon Hensel and Owen Samson also pitched an inning each to give the Hawks a combined two-hitter. At the plate, Kelland Chrystie was 2-for-3 and Geoff Santore was 1-for-2 and scored three runs.
New Milford 13, Newtown Hawks 7: The Hawks fell behind 6-0 to the powerful bats of the New Milford Lightning after 2 1/2 innings, but clawed back to take a 7-6 lead in the fourth before New Milford responded. Hawk standouts were Peter Clifford, who was 2-for-4 and Brandon Hensel who was 1-for-1 with 2 RBI and reached base all three times. Austin LeBlanc pitched a scoreless inning and second baseman Tom Cotton turned a double play by fielding a grounder, tagging the runner and throwing the batter out at first.
Newtown Hawks 11, Brookfield 2: Winning pitcher Brandon Hensel crushed two mammoth home runs, drove in three runs, and pitched two solid innings to lead the Hawks. Geoff Santore had two hits, including a double, and fanned four in two innings on the mound. Paul Whitaker had two hits and two RBIs.
Newtown Hawks 22, New Milford 6: The Hawks broke open a 6-6 game with 11 runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the sixth to coast to victory. Peter Clifford and Daniel Pearson each had three hits, including a double apiece. Tom Cotton, Michael Liberante and Colin Patrick had two hits apiece and Paul Whitaker contributed a double. Brandon Hensel scored four runs and every Hawk batter scored at least once in the big fifth inning.
Woodbury 4, Hawks 3: Woodburyâs first seven batters reached base and four of them scored unearned runs. Newtown pitchers Colin Patrick, Peter Clifford and Brandon Hensel closed the door the rest of the way, but the Hawks could not pull out the victory at Woodbury. Brandon Hensel was 2-for-2 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored and Kelland Chrystie blasted an RBI triple and scored a run. The Hawks could only muster two more hits (singles by Peter Clifford and Tom Cotton).
The Newtown Hawks are 5-5-1 in Route 84 League play.
