NHS FLBA Has Teamed Up With Make-A-Wish To Do Even More Good For Others

The Make-A-Wish Foundation recently partnered with the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at Newtown High School to help to raise donations to enhance the lives of children with serious life-threatening medical conditions.

Beginning March 12 and running through March 18, FBLA members will be selling stars for $1 each outside of the high school cafeteria. Students, faculty, and staff may purchase a star and put their name on it. The stars will then be displayed in the lobby at the entrance to the school. The stars will also be available for purchase during parent conferences on March 18 from 5 to 8 pm.

This is FBLA’s first time participating in this event. The group’s goal is to raise $300.

FBLA has previously partnered with the March of Dimes and was able to raise more than $600 through Pink and Blue Jeans for Babies. All of the schools in the Newtown School District were asked to participate. In that fundraiser, buttons were sold for $5 each and encouraged faculty and staff to wear their buttons and jeans to work to show support for the March of Dimes.

FBLA plans to attend the upcoming March for Babies on April 27 at Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury. Through participating in these nationwide charities FBLA members learn organization, leadership, and teamwork.

The Newtown High School FBLA currently has 41 members, representing all four classes at the high school. Past projects have included running a Toys For Tots & Teens collection and then donating what was collected to Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital; “adopting” a family, purchasing items from the family’s wish list through The Newtown Fund during the holidays; and hosting a trivia contest and candy sale for American Enterprise Day.

The NHS club is currently preparing for the State Leadership Conference, to be held in Waterbury on March 31. Students compete in individual and team events such as accounting, business math, public speaking, job interview, and entrepreneurship.

Chapter officers complete and annual business report and then submit it into the competition. Newtown will be returning to the conference to defend its title from last year.

Officers for this year are Andrea Maret, president; Katie Aiello and Eva Ceretta, vice presidents; Jon Zigman, treasurer; Renee Rushefski, secretary; Katie Schmidt, communications officer; and Linda Magliocco, financial officer.

The members are in all grades 9–12 and not all are in business classes. FBLA teaches leadership skills, charity, fundraising, and teamwork. The two advisers are Martha Cacioppo and Patricia Walsh.
