Pakistani Cooking Class At Library

Newtown resident Kanwal Sakhi will present Pakistani cooking classes at the C.H. Booth Library on March 23 at 11 am and 7 pm in the meeting room.

Ms Sakhi has been cooking since she was a girl of 14 in Pakistan. She moved to New York eight years ago, where she taught cooking classes until she moved to Newtown three years ago.

At the March presentation she will be demonstrating four authentic appetizers from Pakistan. Chicken kebabs, made of ground chicken, onions, tomatoes, and spices; pakoras, a fritterlike potato and chickpea appetizer; samosas, potato filling in a flour wrap; and chatt, a chick pea salad, will be accompanied by a mint chutney.

“Most Indian cooking uses curry powder,” says Ms Sakhi. “Indian and Pakistan dishes might have the same name, like pakoras and samosas, but Pakistani cooking uses a different combination of spices.”

The demonstration and tasting class is limited to 20 participants. There is a $7 charge. Call the library at 426-4533 to register for the class.
