Soccer Team Storms To Championship
Newtownâs U11 boysâ travel soccer team, the Storm, won the Bethel Columbus Day Tournament last weekend by posting a record of 3-0-1 in the competition.
Newtownâs offense, led by Mike Meyers, Hayes Kelchner, Nathan Augenbraun, Sebastian Forero, Shane Gattey, Austin Engler, Thomas Leuci and Richard Ciamarra, put on an offensive display scoring 12 goals.
As good as the offense was, the defense was even better in holding four teams to only one goal during four games. Led by Jamie Cochrane and anchored by Robert Katrinak in goal, the defense, including Connery Mayer, Owen Samson, Jack Riley and Forest Weatherby, gave opposing offenses little to work with. In the championship game versus a strong Trumbull team, Newtown played to a 1-1 tie. Newtown won the championship by virtue of its record in the tourney. Hayes Kelchner scored the Storm goal.
