New Champions At Newtown Country Club
Despite being all very different people, there is one thing that Ed Sidlowsky, Sherri Buczek, Scott Grant, Ian Mason, and Connor Mason have in common.
That is, they are all new club champions at the Newtown Country Club.
It was tournament time last week at the NCC and three new juniors, a men's club and a women's club champion were crowned.
Sidlowsky defeated Tim Ignatius, 1-up, to claim the men's club championship while Buczek defeated Joan Gebert to claim the women's club championship for the second year in a row. On the junior side, Scott Grant won the 11-13 year old title with a round of 40 as Ian Mason took the 9-10 age division with a round of 31 and Connor Mason took the 8-and-under division title (three-hole playoff) with a round of 17.
In the men's tournament, Sidlowsky reached the final by defeating Pat Burke (2-and-1), Walt Gebert (4-and-3) and defending champion Scooch Dunleavey. Ignatius reached the final by defeating Phil Hirsch (2-and-1), Charlie Walsh (1-up) and Wayne Ramey.
In the women's tournament, Buczek, Ann Adams, Sue Paulin and Gebert were the only competitors. Buczek defeated Adams 5-and-4 while Gebert defeated Paulin 3-and-1 in the semi-finals, setting the stage for the championship round.
Buczek defeated Joan Crick last year for the club championship. Mrs Crick had been the 1998 women's club championship, attempting to defend her title when Buczek came along for the 4-and-2 victory.
On the junior side, Grant's 40 in the 11-13 age division put him ahead of Rick Harrison and Matt Costner (Harrison carded a 48 while Costner came in with a 52). Grant, an eighth grader at the Newtown Middle School, put in five hours of practice the day before his championship round in order to be sharp.
He hopes to play golf in high school.
In the 9-10 age division, Ian Mason's 31 helped him slip past Keats Gill, who carded a 35, and Jaime Tibbets, who carded a 38. And in the 8-and-under division, where it took just three holes to decided a champion, Connor Mason's 17 put him on top of Tayrne Leahey and Brian Cantore, who each carded a 25.
