Council Sets Tax Rate
The Legislative Council Wednesday set the tax rate for 2001-2002 at 31.8 mills, which represents a 2.3 mill (or 7.7 percent) increase over the current year.
Last week, the town voted 1,436 to 934 to approve a $72.9 million budget. Just 16 percent of the registered voters turned out. Much of the increase was a result of an additional $1.2 million in debt service which will be used to pay the first installment of a 20-year bonding issue for the construction of a 5/6 school and the purchase of Fairfield Hills.
The tax rate increase means a home assessed at $175,000 would see its taxes jump from $5,163 to $5,565, a $402 increase.
