Police Still Seeking Crossing Guards

By Larissa Lytwyn

Despite two months of active recruiting efforts, the Newtown Police Department is still seeking two crossing guards to tend traffic-congested Church Hill Road, across from Newtown Middle School, Newtown High School, St Rose School, and Hawley School.

Newtown Middle School and Newtown High School virtually operate simultaneously, as does St Rose and Hawley. Currently, there is only one crossing guard stationed between St Rose and Hawley.

“The persons we’re looking for must be mature and reliable,” said Chief Kehoe.

The position entails about 15 hours of service a week in two shifts; approximately 7 to 8:30 am and 1:45 to 4 pm. The salary is $10.90 an hour.

“We provide full training,” said Chief Kehoe.

“Right now,” he continued, “we have a lack of resources. We can’t have our regular officers fulfill the position because they are needed in other areas, handling emergencies. We can’t drag them away from that.”

Potential applicants are encouraged to contact Capt Rios as soon as possible at 270-4233.
