What's Going On Here?
Whatâs Going On Here?
To the Editor:
Very often, we are so enmeshed in our own lives that we find little time to reach out to others. We are so involved with scheduling our childrenâs lives that we sometimes forget that they are growing before our eyes. As they approach adolescence, we may try to keep them âbusyâ so that outside influences may be kept to a minimum. We donât frequently discuss the problems âout thereâ if they donât touch us personally. We can no longer afford that luxury.
Our eyes have been opened more widely these past few weeks by the effort that Dorrie Carolen and Donna DeLuca have been putting forth with their Parent Connection program. It is time for all of us to learn more about the substance abuse problems we face in Newtown and join hands with Dorrie and Donna to reverse a very dangerous trend that has developed.
How do we get started?
On Wednesday, September 24, in the Middle School auditorium from 7 to 9 pm, the Parent Connection is sponsoring a forum entitled âWhatâs Going On Here?â The facilitator will be John Hamilton, a renowned expert on substance abuse. Please make every effort to join with other parents on that night to start the process of working together as a community to rid our town of this awful scourge. Donât wait until the problem comes home ââ start now and work toward building an awareness that will enable us to help our children navigate the dangerous waters they will face.
Please come on September 24. We need you!
Sincerely,
Amy and Bill Sheluck
