Colonial Life Workshop

In the last 30 years there have been many changes in the ways we make our livings and furnish our homes. How do we find out about what life was like in the past?

Students will have a chance to listen and learn at the historic Matthew Curtiss House-Museum on Thursday, November 11 (Veteran’s Day, so no school) when Newtown Historical Society presents “Colonial Life,” its one-hour, hands-on program.

The workshop, designed for  grades K–3, starts at 11 am, at  44 Main Street.

A brief introduction will contrast some  differences between life in the colonial period and life in modern times, students will focus on differences between making clothing long ago and buying clothing today. This is illustrated by trying their hand at carding wool, by dressing in reproduction garments, and designing a quilt squire to bring home.

Children will also learn about the chores young people were responsible for, as well as there  leisure activities. Replica toys for hands-on use will highlight this part of the presentation.

Following the session light refreshments will be served.

This event is open to all appropriately aged students and is free of charge. Space is limited so early registration is necessary. Register by calling the historical society at 426-5937.
