Children’s Programs

*Author Visit – Suzanne Collins: Fans of the Gregor the Overlander series should mark their calendars now!

Author Suzanne Collins will be at C.H. Booth Library on Sunday, October 21, from 3 to 4:30 pm. Ms Collins will be talking about the first four books in her popular series, answer questions, and maybe even hint at what might take place in the next installment of the series.

An author signing session will follow. Books will be available for purchase on the day of the program.

*Halloween Craft: Children ages 6 and up are invited to make a Halloween craft with Marie Walker on Saturday, October 23, from 2 to 3 pm, in the story hour room.

A $3 materials fee will be due at registration. Sign up in the children’s department.

*Halloween Fun for Kids: Save the date and plan to pop in.

Children ages 3-7 are invited to drop in at the library on Tuesday, October 31, before going trick-or-treating.

Programs For Young Adults

*Nightmares Rising: Master storyteller Carol Birch will return to tell spooky Halloween tales on Monday, October 23, from 4 to 5 pm, for readers in grades 6 and up.

All attending will be entered in the door prize drawing for a jar of Halloween candy!

*“Creative Writing: Poetry” begins October 23, for sixth through eighth graders who love to write and would like to be part of a writing group to share their work.

Liz Arneth, assisted by Tom McMorran, will lead the group for five sessions on Monday evenings, meeting from 6 to 8 pm, October 23 until November 20. The group is limited to ten students, with preference given to Newtown residents.

Adult Programs

*Book discussions: Upcoming programs include October 16, Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck, 1 pm; and October 19, Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather, 7:30 pm. Newcomers are always welcome.

*Wellness Series: The library has been hosting a six-part series, “Enhancing Wellness,” on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9. Learn easy ways to take care of yourself and your family, reduce stress, and promote inner peace. Gourmet goodies follow each presentation.

The finale will be October 17, concerning “Nutrition”. You don’t need to have attended the previous sessions to be able to join and learn from this remain program. Please call the library to register, as space is limited and the programs have been very successful so far.

*Tertulia Literaria: A new club for those who enjoy reading and speaking in Spanish, Tertulia Literaria has been launched by Newtown resident Laura Humpries Ross. The club is not a class. Ms Ross stresses only a strong interest and a comfortable proficiency in reading and speaking Spanish are needed

Programs are in the library’s board room once each month. Titles selected for the first year include a cross section of contemporary authors from Spain, Mexico, South America, and Cuba. Members are responsible for obtaining their own books (in Spanish), which are readily available online and at some of the larger bookstores and libraries.

The prize-winning La nieve del almirante by Alvaro Mutis will be discussed during the next program – Thursday, October 19, at 7 pm.

*Audubon Society Program: The Audubon Society will meet on Thursday, October 26, at 7:30 pm.

Walt Landgraf will give a presentation and slideshow on “Preparing for Winter,” and all are welcome.

*Celebrating Book Groups: The C.H. Booth Library is planning a party and reception celebrating all of the book groups in town. Please call  the library with the name of your group and a contact person so we can get your input and include your book group in the fun.
