‘JOHN DILG: NATURAL RE-VISIONS’ AT LUISE ROSS IN NYC MARCH 1

avv/gs set 2-8 #687775

NEW YORK CITY — Luise Ross Gallery will present the exhibition “John Dilg: Natural Re-visions” on view March 1–April 14.

With a unique and idiosyncratic approach, John Dilg investigates the unnatural sources of natural memories in this third exhibition of paintings at the gallery. Through an economy of formal means, Dilg brings personal markers and emblems to life in his small-scale yet potent paintings.

By distilling personal experiences and memories, Dilg transports the viewer to moments of contemplative quietude, whose importance is both immediately apparent and ambiguous. These paintings balance the simplistic and the complex, the passive voice and active assertion, as they venture forth from the artist’s imagination. The built-up surface of these small canvases further emphasize the unnatural artifice of memory, symbolizing perhaps the layered contrivance of our recollection of past events.

The exhibition’s title, “Natural Re-visions,” holds a double-meaning. These paintings, for Dilg, both revise and reconstruct memory, as they present unnatural accounts of purportedly natural events, places, persons and experiences.

The gallery is at 511 West 25th Street, #307. For more information, 212-343-2161 or www.luiserossgallery.com.
