The Comfort Of The Written Word

To the Editor:

During the summer of 1999, Newtown lost four young people. With the exception of Jason, Ernie, Melissa, and Stephen were lost to accidents. All four families suffered the initial shock of the knock at the door, calling family and friends, wakes, services and then the burial. All four families sought the comfort of the written word for solace. For it is the writer through the written word that helps to bring comfort and understanding to the wounded at such times.

In our hour of need came Jeff White. He had lost a dear friend and while trying to comfort himself, wrote his commentary “Needing Help To Say Goodbye.” His words have bought a flood of emotion and comfort every time I’ve read them in the past ten years.

Jeff White went on to write in many well known newspapers as he sought to make his way in the competitive field of journalism. Seeking perhaps to be the next Ben Bradley or Ed Murrow. He found love and was loved.

His family was exceptionally proud of him. I am proud to have known him. His friend that he so well eulogized would have been proud. His friend was my daughter, Melissa. Peace and love to them all.
