NHS Ice Hockey

To the Editor:

“I didn’t know the high school even has a hockey team.”

Unfortunately, we hear that phrase often. Indeed, our high school has a hockey team, and it celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Last March, we were just one goal away from reaching the Division III CIAC State semifinals and are returning much of the same team and some exciting new additions.

The only part still missing is you. Unlike most of the high school’s other varsity sports that charge a modest pay-to-play fee, the school, due to the understandable constraints of their own budget, provides funding for our coaches, and for the game officials only. The bulk of our costs that consist of ice rink rental and bus transportation that are paid for via fundraising, and out of pocket from the participating families that approximates $1,500 per player per year. The players, their siblings, parents, and coaches work tirelessly all year around to raise funds for our team.

There are many ways you can help. A great place to start would be to visit www.newtownhockey.com and view our sponsorship opportunities, print out our schedule, and find and follow us on Facebook. In the coming weeks we will be selling season tickets for our eight home games at Danbury Ice Arena. On Saturday January 8 we have joined forces with the newly formed Danbury Whalers hockey team to hold a Newtown Hockey/Whalers night that we will be selling tickets for in the coming months.

The Newtown Ice Hockey Booster Club, Inc was formed and qualified as a 501(c)(3) public charity for the purpose of supporting and fundraising the team, and therefore any donation or sponsorship you make to the club is eligible for tax deductible status. You may find our IRS qualification letter in the Documents section of the website.
