John T. Ryan

Devoted Father

John T. Ryan, 92, formerly of Bethel, died January 6, at Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center, with his family at his side. He was born in New York City, the son of Clara M. (McGough) Ryan and John A. Ryan, June 5, 1918.

He is survived by five children, including Jack Ryan, and his wife Patricia, of Newtown. In addition to his children, Mr Ryan is survived by 13 grandchildren; two nephews; a niece; and three great-grandchildren. Mr Ryan was predeceased by his wife, Veronica A. Ryan; his parents; a son, Charles; and a sister.

In 1941, he graduated with honors from Fordham University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Shortly after graduation, he proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Coast Guard.

The Ryans lived for many years in Woodside, N.Y., with their six children. He worked briefly on Wall Street before beginning a 45-year career at The New York Times in the circulation department. He retired in 1991 at the age of 72.

He loved his wife and children, and was very proud of their many accomplishments. He and his wife valued education and encouraged their children to pursue continual learning. He enjoyed taking long walks around New York, which he often referred to as the greatest city in the world. In his younger years, he played stickball on the West Side. He also enjoyed the horse races and the St Patrick’s Day Parade.

Visitation was scheduled for Friday, January 14, from 10 am to noon, at the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Avenue, Bethel, followed by a service at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 141 Greenwood Avenue, Bethel.
