One Percent

Is Not Enough

To the Editor:

The removal of one percent from the budget is a insult to all taxpayers here in Newtown. One percent, does that mean that there is “fat” in the budget — are we looking at another one percent if it fails on the 17th of this month?

Is this the kind of management we want from our elected officials?

It’s as simple as this; the middle class is hurting, food costs are gone over the top, gas is costing nearly $50 just to fill up the tank to go to work. Heating oil is costing nearly as much as a mortgage payment, and the value of our homes has gone down the drain.

The only thing our elected officials know how to do is raise taxes (be they local or state).

When does it stop? Where is it going? What kind of leadership is this? Is this the way you run your household? When was the last time you had a pay raise, citizens? Why are we being asked to dig deeper and when we say No (by voting) we are “given” a one percent give back.

Vote No on the budget — see what next chapter has in store for us.
