Strikers Reach Connecticut Cup Semifinal Round
Newtownâs U13 boysâ soccer team, the Strikers, continued their winning ways and reached the semifinals of the Connecticut Cup Soccer Tournament. The tournament for this age group includes 36 teams from around the state.
Newtown worked its way to the semifinals by earning a first-round bye, then by defeating Hebron (4-2), Westport (2-0), and most recently Ridgefield (4-1). The Ridgefield game was played at home this past Friday night at Tilson field.
The Strikers are 9-2-1 because of teamwork, and unselfish, aggressive, clean play that translates into a potent offense and a stifling defense.
The playmakers in the middle of the field command the pitch and maintain possession with an attacking yet defense-minded attitude. Cole Rogalin, Robby Schreiber (captain), Chris Rovelli, and Conner Fulton form the middle. The left and right side of the pitch is manned by James Carney, Liam McNichols, and Tony Leonardi. Excellent play on the sides has resulted in many goals and assists, giving the Strikers a great advantage this year.
Up front the Strikers are led by Omar Rodriguez, Albert Dean, and Jacob Harper. Goals come from fast breaks, crosses, and headers.
The defense is led by John Carlson (captain), Alex Gerbo, Scott Martin, and Tyler Dullinger limiting shots on goal. When opponents get a clean shot off they rarely find the back of the net with goalkeeper Zachary Laros in the way. The Strikers, coached by James Kelly, will host the Burlington Eagles for the right to play for the championship.
