John Summerlin, a Newtown resident and a student at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, was among more than 125 runners who recently participated in the third annual Poverty Awareness Marathon at the school.

Kaley Kruger, a 2010 graduate of Newtown High School, was recently awarded First Prize in the Aetna Freshman Writing contest for her essay “Empirical Reality to Authenticity: Joyce’s Development of the Work of Art in The Dead.” Kaley read selections of her essay and received her award on October 27 at the Dodd Center on the University of Connecticut, Storrs campus, where she is a sophomore. Kaley is a student in the ACES Pre-Education program with plans to pursue a career in special education. She is the daughter of Heidi and Cliff Kruger of Sandy Hook.

Ryan Korth, a Newtown resident and student at the Pomfret School, was recently named to the honor roll for the fall term. A student can earn honors with a 3.0 average and no grade below a B-.

Melissa King of Newtown was accepted into Juniata College’s study abroad program. Melissa is studying history at the Huntingdon, Penn., college, and plans to travel to United Kingdom.

Lauralton Hall, Milford, recently released its First Quarter Honor Roll for the 2011-12 school year. On that list was twelfth grade student and Newtown resident Mary Siroky, daughter of Diane and David Siroky. Honors students at the school have an average of at least 86 in all academic courses.
