June G.      Shohet
June G. Shohet, 85, of Fairfield, died September 10, at the Jewish Home for the Elderly. She was born in New York City, a daughter of Mollie and Louis Bruch.
Her sons, Robert, and his wife Barbara, of Newtown and Michael, and his wife Carol, of Lansdale, Penn.; and one granddaughter, Melissa, survive Mrs Shohet. Norman Shohet, her beloved husband, predeceased Mrs Shohet in 2005.
Mrs Shohet earned a degree in education from Bernard Baruch College in New York City and in 1954 received her certification from the New York Board of Education. She taught in the New York City school system, including from 1958 to 1960, while taking night courses for her masterâs degree at Columbia University Teachers College. She also taught in Stony Brook (Long Island), N.Y., where she lived until 2004.
She was a Cub Scout den mother and in the 1980s, purchased Three Village Trips, bringing groups into New York City, two to three times weekly, for ten years.
Mrs Shohet was very intelligent, hardworking, loving and supportive, and passionate about learning and teaching. She fostered learning, academic excellence, and love of classical music in both of her sons, who played the cello. She and her husband loved the arts, appreciated and collected original artwork, visited museums, galleries, and synagogues all over the world, and enjoyed Rodgers and Hammerstein show tunes, and especially loved classical music. The Shohets were concertgoers for many years to the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood, Caramoor, Carnegie Hall, Suffolk Symphony, and other concert series.
In her later years she enjoyed traveling with her husband to Alaska, Aruba, Israel, England, and the United Kingdom, and a trip to China, Macao, and Hong Kong. She and her husband were staunch supporters of the State of Israel and contributed to many charities in support of Israel.
She was raised in a traditional Orthodox Jewish home and felt spiritually connected during her entire life. She was an active member of the North Shore Jewish Center (NSJC) in East Setauket (Long Island), N.Y., for more than 35 years, spoke Yiddish, and with her husband founded the Norman and June Shohet (NSJC) Scholarship Fund to be used for the purpose of assisting students. She was a proud member of the Womenâs Auxiliary of the Jewish War Veterans.
In her later years she was a frequent visitor to her local library, then became very involved in activities and classes at the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield, where she was an officer of the Residentâs Council.
Funeral services took place September 13, from The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home in Fairfield, with interment at Beth Moses Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y.
