Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse team won three of its first four games to begin the season.

In a rematch of last year’s South-West Conference championship game, the Nighthawks toppled visiting Brookfield 13-6 on April 9. Deegan Beauchemin and Jared Pearson both had hat-tricks, and Conrad Morris and David MacKinnon each scored twice.

Newtown lost 10-9 in overtime to Fairfield Ludlowe, in another home tilt, two days later. Bubba Condon netted five goals and an assist, Pearson had two goals and two assists, and Beauchemin added two goals and an assist.

The Hawks defeated host Bunnell of Stratford 17-2 on April 14. Conrad Morris had four goals, and David MacKinnon, Jared Pearson, Peyton Manning, and Matt Meyers all scored twice. Nick Rubino and Joey Santella had five and four ground ball scoops, respectively.

Faceoff specialist Mark Urso was strong in the circle against Bunnell, winning 17 draws in the game, and Newtown Coach Glenn Adams has been pleased with the faceoff success since it has led to offense.

“He’s been great for us,” Adams said. “If you control the middle of the field, you control possession of the game. We just have to do our part on offense to cash in on those possessions.”

The Newtown coach noted that this was a good team win. “We got a handful of solid plays throughout the game from a variety of players, which is nice to see,” Adams said.

The Hawks need to improve on offense, the coach believes. Although his squad’s lowest goal total among the first three games is nine, had the attack players capitalized better in the game against Ludlowe, the Hawks could have won in regulation rather than losing in overtime, Adams believes.

“As we get used to what we’re doing hopefully the execution picks up,” the coach said.

Newtown beat visiting Bethel 9-6 at Blue & Gold Stadium on April 16. Ryan Sullivan had three goals and an assist, Morris and MacKinnon both hit the back of the net twice, and Logan Walsh and Meyers each added tallies. Pearson had a trio of assists, and Walsh added two helpers. MacKinnon and Manning fielded four and three ground balls, respectively.

The Hawks will visit Conard at 2 pm on Saturday, April 18, then go to Masuk of Monroe for a 7 pm game on Monday, April 20. The next home tilt won’t be until April 25 when Simsbury comes to Blue & Gold Stadium for a 6 pm start.

Logan Walsh makes a play as Bethel players defend during Newtown's 9-6 win on April 16.
