The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown will present its 30th Annual Juried Spring Art Show for nine days this year, May 6-14. The show will be presented at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street in Newtown. It will begin with an opening reception and awards ceremony on Saturday, May 6, from 2 to 4 pm, although the public may view the works included in the event at any time during regular library hours Saturday. The show will remain on view through Sunday, May 14.
The spring show has been expanded this year to include mixed media, with the hope that this will encourage more contemporary artists to enter and present visitors with a wider variety of styles. Members and non-members will have work included in the event this year.
In addition to the mixed media artwork, the 30th annual incarnation of this SCAN event will present visitors with the opportunity to view oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, acrylics, graphics and sculpture.
Saturday afternoonâs awards ceremony will include a Best-in-Show Award of $300, plus $700 in additional cash prizes and merchandise certificates from a variety of area businesses and vendors. Judges this year for the spring show include the professional artsits John Swatsley of Harwington, Hank McLaughlin of Stratford, and Marc Chabot of Woodbury.
Show chairman this year is Susan Deming, a resident of Newtown.
At the same time the SCAN show is running, the artistsâ society will also be hosting a one-man exhibition of works by the celebrated artist Franklin Jones. Mr Jonesâ work will be presented throughout the libraryâs main floor.
The SCAN 30th Annual Juried Spring Art Show and the exhibit of works by Mr Jones can be viewed at any time during regular library hours. C.H. Booth Library is open Monday through Thursday, 10 am to 8 pm; Friday, 12 to 5 pm; Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm; and Sunday, 1 to 5 pm.
