SOUTHBURY – Already at 3-2 for the season, the Newtown High School swim team was looking to further pad its early season record on Tuesday. But one of the Nighthawks’ toughest rivals – Pomperaug – wasn’t about to let it happen.

Newtown dropped a 100-86 decision and fell to 3-3 on the year.

Freshman Amy Robinson (50 freestyle and 100 backstroke) was a double winner for the ‘Hawks. Melissa Rushefski (200 freestyle), Caitlin Malloy (100 butterfly), and Margaret Randall (100 breaststroke) were all individual winners.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Kate Hoolehan, Liz Portnoy, Lauren Kotwicki and Rushefski also won. Freshman diver Kim Mayers put together another impressive effort on the board, scoring 154.55 points, but against a strong diving team from Pomperaug that was only good for second place.

Margaret Ashey (2nd in 200 individual medley and 2nd in 500 freestyle), Lauren Kotwicki (3rd in 50 freestyle), Chrissy Glander (3rd in 100 backstroke) and Jessica Remitz (2nd in 100 breaststroke) also had good performances.

Newtown won six of the 12 events during the meet, but Pomperaug took seven second-place finishes and eight third-place finishes to load up on the depth points. The Lady Panthers hurt the ‘Hawks badly by sweeping 1-2-3 in the 100 freestyle.

The ‘Hawks were mathematically still in the meet heading into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, but by being down, 90-82, they needed to win first and second to escape with a win.

The ‘Hawks finished a close second.

The Nighthawks will resume their tri-meet schedule on Friday with a trip to Milford to battle Foran and Joel Barlow. The ‘Hawks won’t return to the pool until the following Friday, October 12, for a battle with Lauralton Hall back in Milford.
