Local Relief Drop-Off Point Established For Hurricane Victims

To aid in the relief effort for victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, Governor M. Jodi Rell announced that the Connecticut Armories will be receiving the following commodities that are desperately needed: bottled water; easily opened, nonperishable foods and snacks; batteries; blankets; tarps and tents.

Newtown First Selectman Herb Rosenthal is encouraging all Newtown residents to participate in this effort to the extent of their ability to do so. To assist Newtown residents in this effort, the first selectman said the Town of Newtown will accept these items at the Public Works Garage on Turkey Hill Road, on weekdays from 7 am to 3 pm, and transport them to the Waterbury Armory at 64 Field Street.

Anyone wishing to make cash contributions can contact the Red Cross at 800-HELP-NOW or www.redcross.org; the Salvation Army at 800-SAL-ARMY or www.salvationarmyusa.org; AmeriCares at 800- 486-HELP or www.americares.org.

At this time, residents are asked not to send any other items. When they are needed, there will be further announcements, according to Mr Rosenthal.
