Openings For Unaffiliated Voters
Openings For Unaffiliated Voters
To the Editor:
Recently, James Juliano, the chair of the Newtown Democratic Town Committee, invited unaffiliated voters to contact the party if there is interest in serving on a local board or commission. We are glad to see one of the established political parties in town overtly making such an appeal in 2009.
The sincerity of Mr Julianoâs invitation was confirmed with the excellent selection of political newcomer Paul Lundquist to the recent opening on the Legislative Council.
If such an invitation had been offered sincerely in 2007 by either of the two established political parties in town, it might not have been necessary to form the Independent Party of Newtown (IPN).
The purpose behind the creation of IPN was simple: get new faces and ideas involved in town government to encourage positive change. We wanted to create a local government that was accountable, had checks and balances, and was transparent. Those of us in IPN believe important strides have been made towards achieving those goals.
I am excited at the prospect that the change that started with IPNâs involvement in the 2007 election will continue and expand in 2009.
Sincerely,
Gary Davis
