Summer Reading: It's a Page Turner
Summer Reading:
Itâs a Page Turner
By Anna Hodge
It has been said that reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. For the students of Newtown, whether in elementary school, high school or in-between, reading lists have been compiled to suit any reading level. Programs have also been created to ensure that this summer students will not only exercise their bodies, but exercise their minds as well.
Although summer reading lists are offered, not every child will necessarily follow the suggestions and choose a book off of the list.
C.H. Booth Librarian Alana Bennison says that when it comes to summer reading lists, âThere are lots of lists out there, but I think the best recommendation is that children should read what they like.â
The summer reading program offered at the C.H. Booth Library allows kids to read whatever genre suits them, but still âencourages children to read every day throughout the summer,â Ms Bennison said.
While many schools in the Newtown school district have required summer reading books, the librarians at Reed Intermediate School tend to shy away from them.
âWe donât believe one size fits all, especially since we have a wide range of reading skills and interests,â said librarian Virginia Snowden.
Instead, the school offers a summer reading program, already consisting of 220 kids, according to Ms Snowden, which begins July 1 and ends July 31 in the Reed Intermediate School Library. For those who are interested though, a list is offered, which includes Nutmeg Award Books.
Unlike Reed, however, Newtown High School and Newtown Middle School both have summer reading lists that are used to help guide students toward choosing the right book. The following are just a few books that are on the schoolsâ summer reading logs.
