Burglary/Larceny

Police report that they responded to a burglar alarm at 12:57 am on January 31 originating from the Hawleyville Deli on Hawleyville Road.

 After they arrived, police found that entry into the building had been made by forcing open the front door of the business.

An undetermined amount of items were stolen in the incident, police said.

Police ask anyone with information on the incident to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841. Information provided would be kept confidential, police said.

Shoplifting

After receiving a shoplifting complaint, police responded to the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street about 7:21 pm January 31.

Following an investigation, police charged John Fernandez, 18, of Danbury with sixth-degree larceny and with conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny.

Police said they held Fernandez on $500 bail for a February 1 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

MV Violations

Police said they saw motorist David Butler, 53, of Oxford using a handheld cellphone while driving northward on Hawleyville Road about 4 pm January 31, so they stopped him to investigate.

Police charged Butler with illegal use of a handheld cellphone while driving, misuse of marker plates, and driving without automotive insurance.

Police released Butler on a written promise to appear in court on February 15.
